When to Consider a Different Tray Style
Automated packing lines
This tray relies on manual folding and friction locks. If the packing line uses automated folder-gluers or tray erectors, a machine-erected glued tray is usually a better choice.
Heavy payloads and long-wall bowing
The single-thickness long walls and base-panel pinch locks are designed for light to medium payloads. Heavy items may cause the long walls to bow or the locks to slip during transit.
Board, Print, and Packing Choices
Board thickness and lock tension
The D-shaped cutouts in the base and the creases for the roll-over panels are sensitive to board thickness. Changing the material caliper means updating the template to ensure the locks hold tension without tearing.
Print visibility on interior panels
Because of how the tray folds, the inside of the long walls will display the unprinted back of the board, while the inside of the short walls will display the primary printed side. Artwork should be planned accordingly.
Grain direction for roll-over panels
To prevent the board from cracking when the short walls fold 180 degrees over the dust flaps, the grain direction should run parallel to the short walls.
Outer closure and shipping route
As an open-top tray with friction locks, it is not meant for standalone parcel shipping. If the product will travel through a courier network, an outer mailer or secure shipping box should be planned.
Template Adjustments Beyond Dimensions
Lock cutout tuning
The width and depth of the pinch locks can be adjusted to match the specific friction and tear resistance of the chosen board grade.
Wall height proportions
The depth of the tray can be increased for taller products, though very tall single-thickness long walls may lose rigidity without heavier board.

The corner dust flaps can be extended to provide more overlap inside the roll-over panels, which can help square the corners on larger trays.
Packing details
Manual assembly sequence and corner locking
Proper assembly involves folding the long walls up first, turning the dust flaps inward, and then rolling the short walls over the flaps to lock into the base. Attempting to fold the short walls first will prevent the corners from locking.

Because the trays ship flat and use no glue, they take up very little space in the warehouse before packing begins.

Does this tray use glue or tape?
No. The tray is held together entirely by mechanical pinch locks where the short walls slot into D-shaped cutouts in the base.
Can this tray be erected by machine?
Generally no. The unglued design and specific fold sequence are intended for manual assembly at the packing station.
Will my graphics show on the inside of the tray?
Only partially. The inside of the short walls will show the printed graphics because those panels roll over from the outside. The inside of the long walls and the base will show the unprinted side of the board.
Can I use a thick corrugated board for this tray?
This template is designed for folding carton board. Using thicker micro-flute corrugated is possible but means careful adjustment of the roll-over creases to prevent the board from cracking or resisting the fold.
Is this tray suitable for parcel shipping?
Not on its own. It is an open-top tray with friction locks. For parcel shipping, it should be placed inside a secure outer mailer or shipping box.
Why is board thickness so important for this design?
The pinch locks rely on exact friction to stay closed. If the board is thicker or thinner than the template expects, the locks may either fail to engage or tear the base panel.
How is the tray delivered?
The trays are delivered completely flat, making them highly efficient to store before use. They are erected on demand as items are packed.
Can a lid be added to this tray?
