Where the Crash-Lock Bottom Makes Sense
High-Volume Manual Packing
The primary reason to choose a crash-lock bottom over a standard manual fold is labor. If your team is erecting hundreds of boxes a day by hand, the instant-snap base reduces assembly time.
Retail Display
The flat main panels offer excellent billboard space for high-quality graphics, while the gabled handle adds a premium, gift-like presentation.

When to Consider a Different Box Style
Direct Parcel Shipping
The protruding handle can catch on courier sorting belts, and the mechanical top lock may open during transit. If shipping direct-to-consumer, evaluate standard mailers or use an outer master carton.
Dense Palletization
Because the handle prevents flat stacking, palletizing these boxes requires either a top-layer-only approach or specialized master shippers. If dense stacking is critical, a standard regular slotted carton or roll-end tuck-top may be a safer choice.
Board, Flute, and Handle Clearances
Board Thickness and Flute
E-flute is a common choice. If you require thicker B-flute or C-flute for heavier items, the handle's locking tongue and slot must be carefully adjusted so they do not bind or tear during closure.
Production Route and Volume
The crash-lock bottom requires specialized multi-point folder-gluer equipment at the factory. This setup usually requires higher repeat volumes to justify the production route compared to unglued boxes.
Print Surface and Coating
The large flat panels offer excellent space for branding. However, if the box will be carried for long periods, consider coatings that prevent ink from rubbing off on the consumer's hands.
Handle Ergonomics
The clearance between the handle cutout and the top of the box must accommodate the user's hand comfortably, especially for heavier payloads.

Handle Height
The height of the handle above the box can be extended for better ergonomics or reduced to save material, depending on the clearance needed for the user's hand.

The lifting load is concentrated entirely on the die-cut handle holes and the top locking tab. If your product is dense, the board grade must be specified to prevent tearing at these stress points.

Can I ship this box through a parcel courier?
It is vulnerable in parcel networks. The protruding handle can catch on automated sorting belts, and the top lock is not designed for direct parcel delivery without tape. For parcel delivery, this box should be packed inside a standard outer shipper.
Does this box require tape or glue to assemble?
No tape or glue is needed at the packing bench. The factory pre-glues the side seam and the crash-lock bottom. You simply push the edges to snap the base open, load the product, and interlock the top handle.
Can these boxes be stacked on a pallet?
Stacking is difficult because the gabled handle prevents a flat top surface. They are typically shipped flat to you, assembled and loaded, and then either placed in master cartons or used as the top layer on a mixed pallet.
How much weight can the handle and bottom support?
The weight capacity depends entirely on the chosen board grade and flute. The crash-lock base is strong, but the handle cutouts are the most likely failure point for very heavy items. We recommend physical drop and carry testing for your specific payload.
What is the tradeoff between a crash-lock and a manual snap-lock bottom?
A crash-lock base is pre-glued at the factory, allowing your team to snap it open instantly. A manual snap-lock requires the packer to fold four bottom flaps together. The crash-lock saves packing labor but requires a more complex factory production route.
Can we use a very thick corrugated board for extra protection?
Thicker flutes like C-flute or double-wall can make the top handle very difficult to lock. The small locking tabs may crush or fail to engage. E-flute or B-flute are generally the most reliable choices for this handle style.
How are these boxes delivered to our facility?
They are delivered knocked down flat. The side seam and bottom flaps are already glued by the manufacturer, so they take up minimal storage space before assembly.
Can we print on the handle panels?
Yes, the handle panels can be printed. However, if the box is heavy and will be carried for a long time, it is worth discussing a protective coating to prevent ink from rubbing off onto hands.
