When to Consider Enclosed Shippers or Standard Trays
Individual courier shipping
This is an open-top tray. If the product will be shipped individually through a courier network, it should be placed inside a master carton or replaced with a fully enclosed mailer or standard shipping box.
Pallet loads without interlocking needs
If the trays will not be stacked, or if they will be shrink-wrapped on a pallet where interlocking is unnecessary, a standard roll-end tray without tabs may be simpler to die-cut and assemble.
Board Thickness, Print Layout, and Assembly Labor
Board thickness and locking clearance
The end walls roll over the side dust flaps and lock into the base. This double-crease mechanism is very sensitive to board thickness. While E-flute is a common starting point, moving to a thicker B-flute means adjusting the crease spacing and slot widths so the tray folds without binding.
Print layout on roll-over panels
Because the inner end walls roll over from the outside to the inside, the interior surface of the corrugated board becomes visible on the inside of the tray. Artwork should be planned carefully if the tray needs continuous branding.
Hand assembly versus tray formers
These trays are delivered flat and erected at the packing station. While they fold together quickly by hand, high-volume operations should verify if their automated plunge-style tray formers are compatible with the specific tab-and-slot locks.
Product ventilation needs
If the product needs to cool quickly or release moisture, the open top helps, but side ventilation holes may also be worth discussing before finalizing the dieline.
Adjusting Tab Height and Wall Dimensions
Tab and cutout sizing
The height of the stacking tabs and the size of the corresponding cutouts can be adjusted based on the weight of the stacked trays and the clearance needed for interlocking.
Dust flap length
The internal dust flaps can be extended to provide more corner support, which helps prevent the side walls from bowing outward under heavy loads.
Ventilation and hand holes
Cutouts can be added to the side or end walls to improve airflow for perishables or to provide grip points for manual lifting.

Flatbed die-cutting for tabs and slots
Because of the protruding tabs, cutouts, and locking slots, this tray relies on flatbed die-cutting. It is typically not produced on standard rotary slotting equipment.

Tab crush risk during palletizing
When stacking these trays, packers should ensure the tabs align properly with the base of the tray above. Misaligned stacking can crush the tabs, compromising the stability of the entire column.

Does this tray need glue or tape?
No. Despite the legacy 'glued tray' name in some catalogs, this specific tray uses a mechanical roll-end design. The end walls fold over internal flaps and lock into the base using friction.
How much weight can the stacked trays support?
The vertical load is carried by the double-thick end walls and the side walls. The exact weight limit depends entirely on the chosen board grade, flute profile, and the product inside. Heavy loads should be physically compression tested.
Can this tray be shipped via parcel couriers?
Not on its own. Because it has an open top, it provides no containment or security for individual courier transit. It should be placed inside a master shipping box or used exclusively for palletized freight.
How does the fold affect custom printing?
The end walls roll over from the outside to the inside. This means the unprinted inside of the corrugated board will be visible on the interior end walls unless the board is printed on both sides.
Can this be made in heavy double-wall corrugated?
Double-wall board is usually too thick for standard roll-end friction locks. The thick material makes the double creases difficult to fold and places too much tension on the locking tabs. Single-wall flutes like E or B fold more consistently.
Are these trays delivered flat?
Yes. They are die-cut and shipped flat to your facility, where they are erected manually or by specialized tray-forming equipment before loading.
Can we add hand holes for carrying?
Yes, the end walls can accommodate hand holes below the stacking tabs, making it easier for retail staff to lift and move the loaded trays.
Is this tray suitable for automated packing lines?
It depends on the equipment. While it can be formed by specialized plunge-style tray formers, it lacks the standard glue flaps used by many high-speed linear folder-gluers.
