When to Compare Other Top and Base Styles
If you want a top closure that tucks in
The A61.10.01.03 relies on tape or a label to stay closed. If you prefer a carton that closes securely without tape, evaluate a crash-lock carton with a tuck-in top (A61.20.01.03).
If manual base assembly is acceptable
The crash-lock base requires specific manufacturing steps. For lower volumes where manual taping is acceptable, a standard carton with overlapping top and bottom flaps (A01.10.00.03) may be a practical alternative.
Top Sealing and Board Grade Choices
Top sealing method
Decide how the overlapping top flaps will be secured. Options include standard packing tape, adhesive applied on the packing line, or branded tamper-evident labels. This choice affects the final presentation and unboxing experience.
Board grade and flute thickness
Typically produced in standard paperboard for retail. If moving to a micro-flute for added protection, the crash-lock geometry must be carefully checked to ensure it folds flat and erects without binding.
Bottom pad requirements
For heavier items, decide if a separate rigid bottom pad is needed to prevent the interlocked base from bowing under point loads.
Print layout on the top flaps
Determine which of the outer top flaps will fold last, as this flap will provide the continuous, unbroken surface for primary branding or instructional text.
Base Geometry and Flap Adjustments
Base interlocking geometry
The angles and cutbacks of the crash-lock tabs are calculated based on the carton's width. While the overall dimensions can be scaled, the internal locking mechanism should not be altered without physical prototyping to ensure it still erects smoothly.
Top flap coverage
If a full double-thick overlap is unnecessary, the top flaps can be adjusted so only one flap fully covers the opening, or so they meet in the center, reducing overall material usage.
Dust flap modifications
The inner top dust flaps can be adjusted in length to accommodate specific product clearances or to interact with internal inserts.
Board and packing details
Production routing and gluing
This style requires equipment with crash-lock attachments to apply adhesive to the bottom tabs and the side seam. It is delivered knocked-down flat to the packing facility.
Weight limits and bottom bowing
While the interlocked base is strong, heavy point loads can cause the bottom to bow. It is suited for light to medium-weight products unless reinforced with a separate bottom pad.
