ECMA reference
What an ECMA code means
ECMA is a shared reference for folding carton construction. The first letter identifies the construction group, such as a glued carton, fold-up tray, product-related pack, special form, or added feature.
A code identifies the starting construction. Product fit, paperboard, print, finish, closure details, packing method, outside dimensions, and quantity still need to be set for the production order.
- Construction group
- The first letter identifies the construction group. Groups A through E use different coding tables. Groups F and X are lists of special forms and added features.
- Code blocks
- The following number blocks identify details within that group, such as the carton body, base, closure, cover, product arrangement, or feature.
- Dimensions
- ECMA drawings use A, B, and H dimensions on the flat cutout. The finished carton and outside shipping size still need to be confirmed.
- Paperboard and finish
- Paperboard grade, print, coatings, windows, and finish are chosen for the product and the required presentation.
- Product and packing
- The product shape, primary pack, loading direction, closure, and packing method determine whether a catalog structure is a fit.
- Added features
- Group X records an opening, reclosure, handle, hanging panel, display panel, or other feature added to a complete carton style.
