When to compare other carton openings
When the consumer needs to reclose the carton
The X29 zipper destroys the top panel. If the consumer needs to securely reclose the carton for multiple uses, a tuck-end carton or a design with a specific locking tab is necessary.
When the opening should span the shorter width
If the product shape or presentation dictates that the carton should open across its shorter dimension, the ECMA X28 widthwise zipper should be compared instead.
Board, closure, and finish decisions
Board grain direction
This is the most critical decision. The board grain must run parallel to the zipper strip. If the grain runs perpendicular, the tear is prone to wander off the perforation line, ruining the opening experience.
Base carton closure style
The X29 is a feature, not a standalone box. It is most commonly applied to a seal-end carton, which is glued shut at the ends to force the consumer to use the zipper.
Coatings and laminations
Heavy UV coatings or film laminations can prevent the perforations from tearing cleanly. If these finishes are required, an embedded tear-tape may need to be added beneath the zipper strip.
End-flap sealing method
Because the zipper is intended as the primary opening method, the carton's end flaps must be permanently sealed. This usually requires automated gluing equipment on the packing line.
Thumb cut and perforation adjustments
Thumb cut sizing and placement
The semi-circular thumb cut at the start of the zipper can be adjusted in width and depth to ensure it is easy for the target demographic to grip and pull.
Perforation cut-to-tie ratio
The ratio of cuts to ties in the perforation line must be calibrated by the die-maker based on the exact caliper of the chosen board to balance shelf strength with easy tearing.
Tear-tape reinforcement for films
For cartons using heavy films or laminations that resist tearing, a physical tear-tape can be applied to the inside of the zipper strip to cut through the tough outer layer.
Board and packing details
Automated packing line compatibility
When applied to a standard seal-end carton, this design is compatible with automated folder-gluers and cartoning equipment. The zipper feature itself does not typically slow down the filling or sealing process.
