Hand-packing operations
This carton is designed for manual fulfillment. The flat tube opens easily, but the six-flap interlocking bottom and the friction-tuck lid must be folded by hand. It is not suitable for high-speed automated cartoning lines.
Outer shipper distribution
Because the top and bottom closures rely on friction and interlocking flaps rather than adhesive, this carton is generally packed into a corrugated outer shipper for distribution rather than shipping individually.
Limited-run promotional packaging
The manual bottom makes this style accessible for short runs or promotional campaigns that do not have the volume to justify specialized auto-bottom gluing equipment.
When to Consider a Different Box Style
High-volume automated filling
If your packing line uses automated equipment to erect and load cartons, the complex six-flap bottom and friction lid will cause issues. Compare standard straight-tuck or reverse-tuck rectangular cartons for mechanization.
Heavy products or parcel shipping
If the product is heavy or the box will be shipped individually through a parcel network, the snap-lock bottom may disengage. Compare a corrugated hexagonal box like the FEFCO 0730, which can be sealed for transit.
Board, Packing, and Route Decisions
Board thickness and friction
The lid is held closed by two tuck flaps that slide against the inner walls. The thickness of the paperboard directly affects how tightly these flaps grip. Standard folding boxboard (FBB) or solid bleached sulfate (SBS) usually provides the right balance of stiffness and friction.
Micro-flute corrugated risks
While it is possible to cut this shape from very thin corrugated board, the six interlocking bottom flaps can bind or fail to seat correctly if the material is too thick. If corrugated is required, the bottom closure may need to be redesigned.
Print layout across six panels
The hexagonal shape offers six distinct vertical panels. Artwork can be designed to flow continuously around the corners, or each panel can be treated as a separate face for branding and regulatory information.
Packing line space
Since the carton arrives flat but requires manual folding of six bottom flaps, packers need adequate workspace and time to assemble the base before loading the product.
Practical Template Adjustments
Tuck flap depth
The length of the two tuck flaps on the lid can be adjusted. Longer flaps increase the friction and make the lid more secure, but they also require more effort to open and close.
Dust flap height
The three alternating dust flaps that support the lid can be heightened or shortened to change how the lid rests when closed, ensuring a clean presentation.
Interlocking tongue length
The depth of the bottom interlocking flaps can be adjusted to change how tightly the base holds together under product weight.
