Octagonal Crash-Lock Box

The bottom flaps are pre-glued during production. When the flat carton is opened, the tension forces the flaps to swing down and interlock into a floor without additional tape.

The friction-tuck top can open during transit, so this carton is usually placed inside a corrugated outer box for direct-to-consumer shipping.

This box style is generally not recommended for standard corrugated board. The narrow corner panels and complex pre-glued bottom flaps are difficult to fold cleanly with thicker fluted materials. It is usually produced with solid cartonboard.

The dieline provides eight distinct vertical faces. This allows for segmented graphics, but requires careful alignment if a continuous design wraps around the corners.

The octagonal profile and crash-lock bottom involve more complex folding and gluing than a standard square box. The production line folds eight creases instead of four and applies glue to the interlocking bottom flaps.

The internal clearance is determined by the main panel width and the corner chamfers. Cylindrical items like bottles or jars often fit well, but square or rectangular items may lose corner space. A physical prototype helps verify the fit.

Custom paperboard inserts are often used to hold bottles, jars, or cosmetics securely in the center of the octagonal footprint, preventing movement and enhancing the presentation.

A physical prototype in the exact board grade helps verify that the eight vertical creases will fold cleanly without the surface coating cracking, and confirms the pop-up action of the base.
