The envelope top requires multiple folding and tucking motions. If the packing line relies on automation, a standard tuck or glued top is usually a better fit.
Clearances, Board Choice, and Assembly
Internal clearance for the primary product
Because this sleeve slides over another item, the internal dimensions must account for the primary container's exact size, plus a small tolerance to prevent binding or vacuum resistance during loading.
Board thickness and tucking resistance
The envelope closure relies on a rounded tongue tucking into a U-shaped slot. Standard folding boxboard works well. Heavy boards or micro-flutes can make the tongue too stiff to bend and tuck easily, risking surface cracking.
Manual packing labor
While the flat tube is quick to open by hand, the top closure requires an operator to fold two side flaps, fold the back flap, and carefully tuck the front tongue. This takes slightly longer than closing a simple tuck flap.
Base tray or inner box compatibility
If pairing this sleeve with a base tray, the tray's footprint should match the sleeve's internal dimensions closely so the sleeve sits flush and does not wobble.
