When To Consider A Closed Carton
Loose or heavy items
If the product consists of multiple loose components or is heavy enough to overcome a friction fit, an open-ended sleeve may not hold it securely. A straight tuck or lock-bottom carton offers full containment.
Direct parcel shipping
Sleeves provide no protection against dust or loss during rough transit. If the package ships through a courier network without an outer master carton, a fully enclosed mailer makes more sense.
Clearance, Retention, And Board Choices
Friction fit versus shrink wrap
Decide how the product will stay inside the sleeve. A tight friction fit depends on precise clearance calculations and physical testing. Alternatively, a looser sleeve can be secured by applying shrink wrap or clear wafer seals over the open ends.
Grain direction and panel bowing
To maintain a tight friction fit, the main panels should remain flat. Specifying the paperboard grain direction to run parallel to the height of the sleeve helps prevent the wide panels from bowing outward.
Board thickness and rigidity
The sleeve relies on structural stiffness to slide over the product without buckling. Heavier products or tighter friction fits generally benefit from a thicker board grade.
Inside print and coating
Because the ends are open, the inside of the sleeve may be partially visible. If the raw paperboard color is not desired, consider inside printing or selecting a board that is coated on both sides.

Thumb notches for product access
Half-moon cutouts can be added to the open edges, making it easier for the end user to grip and slide the inner product out of the sleeve.
Window cutouts
Die-cut windows can be added to the main panels to reveal specific parts of the primary product or inner tray, though this reduces the overall stiffness of the sleeve.
Hang holes for retail pegs
If using a header variant, a standard round hole, euro-hole, or sombrero hole can be die-cut into the extended panel for pegboard display.
