It depends on the route. For palletized freight or direct retail hand-offs, the mechanical locks hold the panels closed. However, if you are shipping individual units through a parcel network, you will need an outer wafer seal or tape strip to prevent the friction locks from opening upon impact.

Fine flutes, such as E or F flute, are generally the strongest fit. They allow for crisp 90-degree folds and reliable lock insertion. Heavy single-wall or double-wall boards often cause the hinges to bind, making it difficult for the packing team to seat the tabs without crushing them.

It trades taping time for folding dexterity. The packer must fold the walls, align the inner dust flaps, wrap the lid panels, and physically push the tabs into the slots. It is a clean, tool-free process, but it requires two hands and is not suited for automated tray erectors.

The large, flat overlapping lid provides an excellent, uninterrupted canvas for branding. However, be cautious with high-gloss varnishes or slick coatings around the locking tabs, as reducing the surface friction can make the locks slip out more easily.

Because the closure relies entirely on the physical friction between the die-cut tab and the slot, you need to test it with your exact production board. A digital prototype cannot prove whether the tabs will hold tension or crush during assembly.

If you realize your shipping route requires you to tape the box closed anyway, the 0401 is often a smarter choice. It removes the die-cut locking tabs, which simplifies the flat blank and reduces material waste.

Thick double-wall boards are generally a poor fit. The extra thickness causes the 180-degree roll-over hinges to bind, and the locking tabs will likely crush rather than slide cleanly into their slots.

The two lid panels overlap across the top, creating a double-thick layer of corrugated board. This provides high vertical compression resistance when the folders are stacked on a pallet.
