ECMA X45 specifies a reclosable flap based on an extended glue flap with a sideways tear. It is a Group X feature used with a folding-carton design. The illustrated carton shows one side-seam version.

When to Consider a Different Pour Feature

Fine powders and sift risks

This door relies on a friction fit against the torn edges. It is not sift-proof. Fine powders will leak, making a sealed inner pouch or a different spout style a better choice.

Heavy bulk items

Dense, heavy products shifting during transit place outward pressure on the side perforation. If the payload is heavy, the tear strip strength must be carefully balanced against the board's tear resistance, or a different closure may be needed.

Board, Gluing, and Tear Strip Planning

Zoned gluing capability

The converter must be able to apply adhesive only to the lower section of the glue flap, below the tear strip. If glue is applied continuously, the door will be sealed shut.

Grain direction

For a clean, straight opening, the board's grain direction should run parallel to the horizontal tear strip.

Coatings and laminations

Heavy film laminations applied over the tear strip area can prevent the perforation from breaking cleanly. Surface finishes should be discussed early in the project.

Perforation strength and board weight

The cut-to-tie ratio of the tear strip must be matched to the board grade. If the ties are too strong, the board delaminates; if they are too weak, the door opens prematurely during packing or transit.

Dispensing hole size

The internal rectangular cutout can be sized to match the product diameter, controlling how fast the items pour out.

Tear strip placement

Moving the tear strip vertically changes the ratio of the glued base to the opening door, which affects both the size of the access window and the strength of the carton's side seam.

While typically rectangular, the internal cutout can be adjusted in height and width to control the flow rate of the specific product being poured.

Because the dispensing feature is pre-glued by the converter, the carton erects and fills on standard automated cartoning lines just like a normal tubular carton.

The folder-gluer must accurately apply adhesive only to the lower section of the glue flap. Continuous glue lines will ruin the dispensing feature.

Does this require special equipment to pack?

No. The special zoned gluing happens at the converter stage. Once delivered flat, the carton erects, fills, and closes on standard automated cartoning lines just like a normal box.

Is the dispensing door sift-proof?

No. The door covers an open cutout and relies on a friction fit. Fine powders will leak. It is best suited for granules, pills, hardware, or individually wrapped pieces.

Print and Finish

Can we use a heavily laminated board?

Film laminations can interfere with the tear strip, making it difficult for the consumer to open the door cleanly. If a lamination is required, the perforation profile must be physically tested.

Does the tear strip provide tamper evidence?

Yes, for the initial opening. Once the strip is removed, the door can be reclosed, but it will be obvious that the carton has been opened.

How does the door stay closed after opening?

It relies on a friction fit against the torn edges and the board's natural memory at the hinge crease.

How does the tear strip handle direct-to-consumer shipping?

The exposed perforation can catch or tear if shipped loose in mixed courier networks. For direct-to-consumer delivery, an outer shipper or mailer is usually necessary to protect the dispensing feature.
